The Mets got their first look at Stephen Strasburg, the Washington Nationals phenom, on Saturday and appeared poised to win their second straight game before closer Francisco Rodriguez blew the game in the 9th inning.
The Mets jumped out to an early lead against Strasburg when Jason Bay doubled home Alex Cora in the first inning. They added another in the third on a RBI single by Josh Thole.
Knuckleballer R.A Dickey continued his strong pitching allowing just 2 unearned runs over seven innings.
With the game tied at 2 in the 8th inning the Mets retook the lead. Alex Cora led off the inning with a triple and scored on a David Wright single. Josh Thole doubled home Wright and Ruben Tejeda drove in the Mets 5th run with a sacrifice fly.
The Mets had a chance to add some insurance runs in the top of the 9th when the first two batters reached base but Wright, Ike Davis and Jason Bay could not get the job done stranding both runners and the Mets entered the bottom of the inning with a 5 to 3 lead.
Francisco Rodriguez walked the first batter he faced and the inning quickly spiraled out of control. With the bases loaded and one out Adam Dunn barely missed a grand slam but did hit a double to tie the game. Two batters later Ivan Rodriguez ended it with an RBI single to give the Nationals a 6 -5 win.
With the loss the Mets fell to 45 and 36.
